Carfree Census Database is Gone

One of the most popular pages on our web site over the years was our Carfree Census Database. The database allowed visitors to compare cities and towns based on the commuting behavior and car ownership rates of its residents.
We compiled the database from the U.S. Census Bureau decennial census data as a service for people (like us) who do not own a car. We figured a community with a large proportion of people who don't have a car and/or don't drive to work would, in general, be more desirable if you are carfree. Like attracts like.
So why did we remove the database? Three reasons:
- The data was out-of-date. The last data set we had was from 2000, so the data was woefully out of date.
- Lack of time. We've been busy getting our new site up and haven't had time to compile a new data set.
- The Census Bureau changed their sampling methods so later data sets would not be comparable to earlier ones. Our old data set would not be comparable to the latest data compiled by the Census.
We hope to have the opportunity to compile a new data set for our visitors, but our current priority is creating content more specific to the needs of the customers of our business. We'll post an update to this page if/when we have a new dataset available.
