Downtown Ames

This is Main Street in downtown Ames, Iowa, the heart of the downtown business district. Over the past decade or so, several retail shops on Main Street have been replaced with banks, restaurants, and coffee shops, transforming the downtown business district into a service-based commercial center. There are still many retail stores downtown, though, making it a nice place to walk and shop.

Bandshell Park is located a block from the east end of Main Street. The bandshell, which dominates this park, was constructed in 1935. Free municipal band concerts are held here every Thursday night in June and July, and are an enjoyable way to spend a summer evening.

The residential area just north of downtown is known as "Old Town", since it is the oldest residential area of Ames. Several of the homes in this area have been beautifully restored, like this one.

The last stop on our tour is the Ames City Hall. If this building looks like an old high school, that's because it is. The city outgrew the original city hall several years ago. After a new, larger high school was built to replace this one, it was decided to renovate this six-decades-old-building and convert it into a new city hall. The building now houses the city auditorium, gymnasium, police department, and most government offices.
